Chisago County roads in line for funds

A pair of Chisago County roads are in line for federal funding under a transportation funding bill, 8th District Congressman Jim Oberstar said last week. The projects include $900,000 to construct ramps and a new bridge over I-35 at CR-17 in Lent Township north of Stacy and $1 million to conduct design engineering and right-of-way acquisition for reconstruction of the TH-95 bridge over I-35 in North Branch. The second project includes approaches, ramps, signals, turn lanes and multi-use trails. The projects are included in the Houseís $275 billion six-year proposal to fund needs for the nationís highways ($217.4 billion), public transit ($51.5 billion) and safety and research programs ($6 billion). The House bill is a 26 percent increase over the 1998 funding bill. Oberstarís office said it has yet to be determined when funds would be released. If the bill is enacted and signed by President Bush, apportionment could conceivably begin in 30-60 days, officials said.
