Kroc Foundation committee will visit FL Thursday

A delegation of 15-18 representatives of the Kroc Foundation/Salvation Army steering committee will be in Forest Lake today (Thursday) for a site visit as part of the cityís community center grant application.

Rep. Steve Sviggum, R-Kenyon, Minnesota Speaker of the House, will lead the delegation that includes a number of major Twin Cities business leaders. The steering committee will meet with the Forest Lake Regional Community Center Task Force at 10:30 a.m. in the council chambers at City Hall, 220 N. Lake St.

The tentative schedule for today includes the formal meeting, a tour of the community center site south of Forest Lake Airport and a tour of the city. The committee is also planning to have a private lunch meeting where the Forest Lake application will be reviewed.

The local task force is one of a number of Minnesota communities to apply for a multi-million dollar grant from the Kroc Foundation. The foundation was established from the estate of the late Joan Kroc, wife of McDonaldís founder Ray Kroc. Kroc gave $1.5 billion to the Salvation Army with the charge to build community centers nationwide.

The local task force has launched a capital campaign to raise operating funds to support the task force long term.

The Salvation Army steering committee is now conducting site visits to help in the selection process for grant finalists that will be considered on a regional level. A final determination on grant awards is not expected until this fall.
