Minnesota Racing Commission hit with legal action

The Whoa, Nellie! group that opposes the North Metro Harness Initiativeís proposed harness racing track/card room in Columbus Township took its fight to the courts Wednesday filing legal action against the Minnesota Racing Commission.

Whoa, Nellie! asked for a judgment from Ramsey County District Court to halt the commissionís decision to reconsider NMHI's application for a class A and class B license. The racing commission originally denied the application, but has since reconsidered after talks between NMHI and the Minnesota Horsemen's Benevolent Association, Inc. have started as the two sides work on an agreement that would protect the interest of the horsemen at Canterbury.

ìThroughout the 18 month licensing process we have worked hard against multi-million dollar out-of-state big gaming interests,î Whoa, Nellie! representative Don Steinke said. ìOur court action simply levels the playing field in our David vs. Goliath saga. Weíre insisting that citizens have the same access to due process as the guys in the expensive suits.î
