Debaters win honors in Rosemount
The Forest Lake High School debate team came home with awards from the junior varsity and novice tournament at Rosemount High School last weekend.
In Public Forum debate, the team of Lydia Dick and Shannon Joyce placed fourth, and Amanda McGowan and Kyleen Schneider placed sixth out of the 14 teams participating.
On the junior varsity level, honors went to Emily Habisch as she advanced to octofinals after five straight wins of debating. She was defeated by a debater from Bloomington Jefferson High School in round six. She also received an award as 10th speaker out of the 71 JV debaters.
JV debaters Peter Hughes and Ben Knaak had 3-3 and 2-4 records, respectively.
On the novice level, Forest Lake was led by sophomore Danna Bergantine with a 3-3 record and 110 speaker points.
Jake Roshell ended his season with a 3-3 record and 107 points. Helen Lininger followed both closely ending with a 2-4 record and 110 points.
This was the last of the invitational tournaments for novice debaters. Throughout the rest of the season, debaters only compete at the varsity level.
On Friday and Saturday of this week, Forest Lake debaters will compete in the Central Minnesota National Forensic League nationals qualifying tournament at Roseville High School.
The debaters will enter the Section IV tournament after the Christmas break on Jan. 5-6 with the state debate tournament slated on Jan. 14-15
