Wal-Mart begins 2004 teacher program
Wal-Mart in Forest Lake has joined with Phi Delta Kappa to launch the 2004 teacher recognition program. Forest Lake manager Duane Nelson said the local store is now accepting nominations from the public for recognition of an outstanding teacher in the Forest Lake area. Nomination forms are now available at the Forest Lake store, Nelson said. Through the national program, Wal-Mart will give back $4.3 million this year alone to the schools of the winning teachers. Winning teachers will receive a $1000 educational grant from the Wal-Mart/Samís Club Foundation to benefit their school and an honorary Wal-Mart greeterís vest. Winning teachers can also apply for state and national teacher of the year honors. Since the program was started in 1995, Wal-Mart has honored more than 18,000 teachers nationwide and donated more than $10.4 million to local schools. Awards in 2003 totaled $3.6 million.
