Stillwater defeats Rangers in swimming

The Forest Lake High School swimming and diving team got caught in the wake of Stillwater in Thursdays meet.

Andy Knaak finished first in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:53.83 to tie the meet at 15 points after two events. Stillwater pulled ahead in the next two meets, but Brian Welchís first place finish in the diving competition with a score of 223.35 pulled the Rangers within four points.

Two events after the diving competition, Jacob Wasky finished second in the 100-yard freestyle race, then Knaak and Sam Gort finished first and second in the 500-yard freestyle race to again pull the Rangers within four points of Stillwater.

The 200-yard freestyle relay team of Scott Schulze, Chris Duff, Jeff Sandager, and Sam Gort finished second with a time of 1:38.93, to keep the Rangers within six points of Stillwater.

In the final two events, Stillwater pulled ahead of the Rangers to win the meet by a score of 102-84.
Two days earlier the Rangers beat Chisago Lakes. The Rangers had a commanding 36-10 lead after three events, deeming the rest of the meet an exhibition.

In the 200-yard freestyle, Andy Knaak set a new pool record with a time of 1:52.32. Gort and Mark Aanderson finished second and third in that race.

The Rangers swept the top three spots in the individual medley when Schultze, Mark Sandager, and James Kassel finished first through third.

Chisago Lakes divers placed first and second in the diving competition as they are among the top divers in the state, and Welch had a personal best for the Rangers with a score of 238.8 to finish third.

Other first place finishers include Knaak in the 100-yard breaststroke, Gort in the 500-yard freestyle, and Wasky in the 200-yard freestyle.
