Students in ISD 831 schools are off and reading.

With February declared ìI Love to Readî month, the district last Friday officially launched its month-long program, all part of the districtís ongoing reading initiative, ìTurning the pages together.î

Student and staff gathered at Scandia Elementary on Friday for a brief program to kickoff its reading program. Teachers took to the gymnasium stage complete with ìCat in the Hatî caps to give encouragement to the student body.

During the ìI Love to Read Monthî promotion, students throughout the district are being challenged to read aloud along or alone 15 minutes a day. The district has identified an extensive list of suggested books for reading at the various grade levels from pre-school through the secondary grades.

At Scandia Elementary, Marilyn Opp, principal sent home a February calendar that allows parents and their children to record the total number of minutes read at home.

At the end of the month, the forms are to be returned to school in time for the March 2nd ìRead Across America Dayî and the 100th birthday of Dr. Seuss.

ìOur goal here at school is the children to read as many minutes as possible,î Opp said in her letter to parents. ìWe would like you to keep track of how many minutes your child reads outside of school.î

As part of the school reading promotion, each child that reads at least 400 minutes during February will get their name put into a drawing in their classroom. Each classroom has prizes that will be given away at this time.

For every 400 minutes that a child reads, they will receive another chance in the drawing for special prizes. All drawings will take place March 2.

Communityís role

The month-long reading promotion will also involve the community.

In its efforts to promotion the ìTurning the Pages Togetherî reading initiative and emphasize the importance of reading, the district has secured the backing of many restaurants in the district. The participating restaurants have provided placemats and/or table cards that can be used throughout the month.

The participation of the restaurants is designed to help promote reading for people of all ages.

As of Monday, local restaurants that are taking part are:

Meisterís and Scandia Cafe, Scandia; Cornerstone, Nesting Grounds and McDonaldís, Wyoming; Millerís on Main and McDonaldís, Lino Lakes; Big Apple Bagels, Wendyís, McDonaldís, Quiznos, Kodiak Coffee, Perkins, Applebeeís, Sbarro/Arbyís, Norman Quackís, Culverís, Pizza Hut, Famous Daveís, Old Log Cabin, China Buffet and The Lobster Shop.
