Neighborly acts save garage, home

A few neighborly acts may have saved the garage and possibly the home of Dan and Theresa Stromquist in May Township Monday evening.

A neighbor shortly before 5 p.m. informed the couple of flames blazing inside their garage, located at 16491 Norell Ave. N. at the intersection of CR-4 and CR-55.

ìSomehow my truck caught on fire,î Dan Stromquist said. ìI had just parked it in the garage and plugged it in a couple of hours earlier when I got the knock on the door.î

An unknown person driving by the Stromquist's home with a mini-van stopped to help by hooking a chain to the burning vehicle in attempt to tow it from the garage.

However, the burning truck ó a one-ton 2002 Ford diesel with dullies ó was too heavy to move.

Then another unknown man with a larger vehicle stopped to help and successfully towed the truck from the garage.

ìThe flames must have been 20-feet in the air,î Stromquist said. ìItís a good thing they stopped. We feel awfully thankful and lucky that they did.î Theresa Stromquist added.

The Stromquists truck was completely destroyed by the flames. The garage received little damage.

Dan Stromquist said the two gentlemen who stopped to assist did give their names, but in the chaos of the moment, he forgot them.

ìIf we could we would just want to say thanks to the both of them,î Dan and Theresa said.

The Scandia Fire and Rescue team arrived at the scene shortly after 5 p.m. and put out the fire.

According to Scandia Fire Department officials, the official cause of the fire is still under investigation.
