Hugo rail crossing plan advances

The city of Hugo and Washington County have successfully petitioned to establish a new railroad grade crossing for the proposed reconstruction of CR-8 in Hugo. The project includes reconstruction of the county highway as a four-lane divided road between I-35E and US-61, and the construction of a separated pedestrian/bicycle path and traffic signals. The preferred alternative (142nd/143rd Street) requires a new grade crossing of the Burlington Northern Santa Fe railroad line between 145th St. and 140th St. to connect the new CR-8 alignment to US-61. Hugo initiated the process for a railroad crossing with a request to the Minnesota Department of Transportation. An administrative law judge recommended the commissioner of transportation ěgrant the petition of the city of Hugo to establish a new grade crossing, subject to the departmentís recommendations concerning warning devices or other improvements necessary to safeguard the public.î Design details related to the street alignment will be evaluated, including: exactly where the new road will intersect US-61; the type of improvements needed on US-61 and to the east; and the effect on St. John the Baptist Church. Construction will begin in 2005. This road will be constructed with the assistance of over $4 million in federal funding.
