News EditorA Little Canada woman escaped serious injury after a fall from a pontoon boat on Forest Lake early Saturday evening, police said.
According to Forest Lake and Washington County police reports, Elizabeth S. Herkenhoff, 19, was cut on the left heal by the boatís prop as she attempted to come to the surface. She fell from the bow of the boat shortly before 7 p.m. on First Lake.
Herkenhoff was one of nine family members and friends riding on the boat driven by her sister, Mary C. Mattheisen, 34, from Centerville.
Herkenhoff was brought to the Lakeside Memorial Park landing by the pontoon boat. Police and Forest Lake Fire & Rescue personnel all responded to the emergency call.
The woman was taken by ambulance to Regions Hospital in St. Paul where she was recovering this week, police said.
According to police reports, Washington County will issue a citation to Herkenhoff for riding on the bow of the boat.
Animal news
Animal reports continue to dot the police blotter in Forest Lake.
Two additional bear reports were made to Forest Lake on June 9 ó one from the 1700 block of SE 10th St. and one from the area of Scandinavian Cemetery. A female black bear and two cubs were in the city last week.
Police said this week the trio of bears may have moved on after several days of napping and feeding at backyard bird feeders.
In a related bear report, Diane M. Lincoln, 18410 Vassar St. NE, Columbus, reported to Chisago County authorities on June 3 that she struck a bear with her vehicle on Kettle River Blvd. at 250th St. in Wyoming Township.
The bear was hit shortly before midnight. There was little damage to the vehicle and bear ran west from Kettle River Blvd, according to Chisago County Sheriffís Department records.
Forest Lake police also provided assistance to a resident at 9505 N. 207th St. who called to report a large snapping turtle was in the driveway and refused to move.
Officer Tom Hagert took the call and provided a nice touch of public service by moving the turtle to nearby Sylvan Lake where it was released.
