Posted: 6/2/04 Moberg, Svenkenson canít get beyond second day at sections
Joe Drennan The Forest Lake High School boys golf team was hoping to prolong their season at the Section 7AA tournament last week at Grand National Golf Course in Hinckley. Mark Moberg and Jacob Svenkenson were able to add another round of golf to their season with their first day scores. Moberg shot a career best 75 with Svenkenson not far behind with an 80. Moberg had a solid front nine, shooting a 38, but bettered his back nine score with a 37. Svenkenson started out strong with a 38 on the front nine and held on with a 42 on the back nine. Both Moberg and Svenkenson qualified for the second day. Brad Lange shot an 81 and just missed qualifying for the second day by one stroke. Noah Lawson, a second day qualifier last year, finished with an 81 as well. ìYou can imagine the long faces the two had when they found out they missed qualifying for the second day by only one stroke,î Rangers head coach Roger Cheyne said. Eric Larson and Adam Svenkenson also played, but only the top four scores are counted. Larson shot an 86 and Svenkenson shot an 85. As a team the Rangers finished fifth out of 14 schools. The team score was 311. Grand Rapids was the day one winner with a 300 and finished in first with a two day total of 607. On the second day, Jacob Svenkenson shot a 38-38 for a second day score of 74 and two day total of 156. The cut off to qualify for the state tournament was 153. Moberg shot a 43-42 for a second day score of 85 and two-day total of 160. ìMark had a little bit of a rougher time the second day, but it is pretty hard to come up with two career best scores in a row,î Cheyne said. ìIt was good experience for them and with Noah [Lawson] having qualified for the second day last year and all three of them being juniors who knows what will happen next year.î |
