Sports EditorSenior synchronized swimmers Jynelle Gorka and junior Hannah McKenzie capped off the season by earning All-State honors at the state competition as the Forest Lake High School team finished in sixth place with 36 points.
ìFor the first time in the 11 year history of the Forest Lake synchronized swimming program we have two All-State swimmers,î Rangers head coach Laura Walcker said. ìThis is a huge deal.î
To earn All-State honors the swimmers earn points in the extended division.
Gorka and McKenzie teamed up with Alyse Howie in the trio competition of the extended division and finished in first place to become state champions.
Other top seven placers include Alissa Moberg who finished fourth in the figures short division and Victoria Yamry who placed seventh. Moberg and Kate Harrison finished second, and Heidi Bolenbaugh and Yamry teamed up to finish third in the duets portion of the short division.
The team of Heidi Merrier, Rachel Merrier, Lindsey Quale, Kelsey Lefto, Kelsey Burk, Bolenbaugh, Ann Husfeldt and Johannah Borque finished seventh in the team competition of the short division.
In the solo competition of the extended division McKenzie finished sixth with teammate Gorka in seventh place. The team of Howie, Gorka, McKenzie, Ashley Tackes, Katie Prudhomme, Carrie Peterson and Frances Van Sloun placed fifth in the team competition.
ìI am so proud of all the girls,î Walcker said. ìOur team worked so hard this year and the result was a very successful season. The extended division is the most elite division in the state and our girls swam very well and the competition was fierce.î
