North St. Paul too much for Rangers

It was win or go home Wednesday for the Forest Lake High School girls basketball team as they meet North St. Paul in the section 4AAAA playoffs.

Going into the game, Forest Lake head coach Jack Bender said that if the game was a close one he believed his team would probably come out victorious. A close game is exactly what Bender got, but North St. Paul won the game 44-36.

Forest Lake came out and matched North St. Paul point for point in the first quarter, actually going up 14-12 after the end of the quarter.

The second quarter didnít see as much scoring as both teams defenses took over. Forest Lake only allowed six second quarter points, but North St. Paulís defense was a bit stinger only allowing two points.

With the score 18-16 in North St. Paulís favor at the half, it was evident Forest Lake needed to get something going at the start of the third quarter. Forest Lake opened things up, outscoring North St. Paul 12-5 in the third quarter to take a 28-23 lead.

Unfortunately, North St. Paul was able to pick things up in the fourth quarter, pulling ahead of Forest Lake by outscoring them 21-8 to advance in the section 4AAAA playoffs.

Scoring was spread out for Forest Lake. Christina Odegard was the leading score, scoring 12 points. Renee Frericks and Brianna McMahon both had seven points, Laura McMahon had six points, and Krista Skoglund and Katie Anderson each had two points.

The loss gives Forest Lake a final record of 6-20 for the 2003-04 season.
