When track is not in season at Forest Lake High School, most track athletes compete in different sports, but Forest Lake High School junior Kelly Weise chooses to run in Amateur Athletic Union indoor track events.

ìI just like to run a lot,î Weise said. ìI tried swimming in junior high, but i just wanted to run. Tennis would probably be fun but its during the track season.î

Since the tennis season is during the track season and not in the winter like Weise would like it, he runs as in independent in AAU track events. This past weekend Weise competed in the 800 and 1600 meter races at the AAU Invitational at Bethal College.

Weise took first places in both races, finishing the 800 with a time of 2:14, and 5:03 for the 1600.

ìIt was pretty cool,î Weise said. ìI havenít done anything like that before. I thought it was really neat to win two races at one meet and hopefully Iíll be able to win more races during the upcoming track season.î

To prepare for the indoor season, Weise trains at the National Sports Center in Blaine two days a week. The National Sports Center allows Weise to run in a controlled environment during the winter months, not to mention run cushioned running surface.

ìThe National Sports Center is a great facilities for everything and weíre just fortunate that we live close to it,î Weiseís dad Dana said.

Only a junior, Weise doesnít have to start worrying about which college he is going to attent until this time next year, but he has already started thinking about it. As he looks beyond college, Weise says he would like to be an interpreter of some sort.

To help fulfill his goal of someday becoming an interpreter, Weise currently speaks Spanish, will study French next year, and has even tried to teach himself Korean.

Weise will be running alongside his classmates this spring as part of the Forest Lake High School track and field team.
