Joe Drennan A long week for the Forest Lake High School volleyball team began last Tuesday with a 3-0 loss to Stillwater, then saw the Rangers drop three of four games at the Cretin-Derham Hall Invitational. Between the Cretin-Derham Hall Invitational and the loss to Stillwater the Rangers also lost to Mounds View. In the loss to Stillwater, the Rangers fell 26-24, 25-21, 25-17. Megan McKenzie, Megan Becker and Pam Nora were the three top kids against Stillwater. McKenzie went 16 for 16 serving with 10 points and three aces. Becker had eight kills and a .444 kill efficiency while Nora had 21 digs. ìWe just canít close the door and that makes for a frustrating time,î Rangers head coach Sherri Alm said. Two nights later Mounds View defeated the Rangers 25-15, 25-11, 25-19. Sally Kellerhuis was 14 for 14 serving with eight points and two aces. ìTheyíre (Mounds View) tall and had a lot of fire power,î Alm said. After the two Suburban East Conference losses, the Rangers opened the Cretin-Derham Hall Invitational with a 2-1 loss to Brainerd which was followed by a 2-1 loss to South St. Paul and a 2-0 loss to host Cretin-Derham Hall. ìWe should have been 3-1 on the day,î Alm said. ìWe donít shut the door when itís really counting.î In the last match of the tournament the Rangers beat St. Paul Highland Park 2-1. After winning the first game 25-21, the Rangers lost the second one 25-11. The Rangers were able to win the match though with a 15-11 win in the third game. McKenzie was 30-31 serving with 16 points and four aces and Nora had 24 points with eight aces and also led the team with 24 kills. Becker was second on the team with 18 kills. Rachael Anderson and Nora both had 29 digs. The Rangers next match is today, Thursday, at Roseville at 7 p.m. ìWe should do ok, but then we have White Bear Lake which was a tough match last time,î Alm said. |
