In a uniquely scored meet, the Forest Lake High School boys and girls cross country team teamed up to take second overall at the Coon Rapids Invite last Thursday.

The Coon Rapids Invite had boys and girls teams competing together with the top three scores from a seventh-eighth grade race, ninth-tenth grade race and 11-12th grade race going toward a total team score.

On the boys side, the Rangers scored 49 points for first place for the boys portion of the invite, with Hopkins right behind them with 53 points. Helping the Rangers score the 49 points was a first, second and third place finish in the seventh and eighth grade race as Andrew Orth finished first with a time of 9:58. Orth was followed by Jake Riehle (10:07) and Nathan Moen (10:10). Nick Kelley finished fifth with a time of 10:40 and T.J. Antisdel finished eighth with a time of 10:52.

ìTo have five of the top ten from Forest Lake was really awesome,î Rangers boys head coach Bill McElrath said. ìThatís our future so it looks good that we had that many boys scoring.î

In the ninth-tenth grade race the Rangers got strong performances out of Zach Clark who placed first and Ben Brodin placed second. Clark had a time of 18:10 and Brodin 19:09.

In the 11-12th grade race Matt Mach, Ben Fick and Kelly Weise were the top three Rangers runners with a fourth, fifth and 12th place finish. Mach finished in 18:08, Fick 18:16 and Weise 19:29.

ìWe didnít worry at all about times this race,î McElrath said. ìWe worried more about place. The course was narrow and bumpy through the woods so times were not as important as places were.î

On the girls side, the Rangers placed second with a score of 63 behind Hopkins who had 22 points.

ìWe really had a good meet,î Rangers girls head coach Janet Howe said. ìWe had a lot of kids receive medals and I think it was a good confidence booster for the gang.î

In the seventh-eighth grade race, Cheyanne Jaros and Gina Lange finished in the top ten and in the ninth-tenth grade race, Auralee McGary finished second with Kristi Berkley and Annie Dehmlow finishing in the top ten.

ìThe bulk of our girls were at the ninth and tenth grade level so that is where we were very strong,î Howe said.
In the 11-12th grade race both Shawna McNamara and Sarah Wright medaled.

ìI think it was a good meet for us because we tended to have a mix of each of the grade levels which is exciting because itís nice to know itís not just your 11th and 12th graders at the top,î Howe said. ìIt shows we have some depth and more than anything some upcoming runners that are going to be good runners on our team.î

The Rangers combined team finished second with 112 points behind Hopkins who had 75 points.

ìWe ended up with a very nice combined team score,î McElrath said. ìThe race really did a lot to jell our team down the line. I think there was a new spirit of unity and it was really fun to see the seniors giving seventh and eighth graders high fives and cheering the girls on.î
