Posted: 10/6/04 Raiders are home wreckers
Joe Drennan Last season the Forest Lake High School football team went down to Hastings and ruined the Raiders homecoming with an upset 17-2 win. The Raiders didnít forget that as they faced the Rangers for their homecoming game this year. The Raiders jumped out to an early 13-6 lead that swelled to 37-19 by the time the game was over. The Raiders first scored on an 18 yard run by Pat Wadzinski who also kicked a successful extra point. The Raiders added six more points to their lead when Jared Stewart ran the ball in from five yards out. Wadzinskiís extra point attempt was wide right. It looked as though the two teams were going to head into halftime with the score 13-6, but the Raiders picked up the ball on a Rangers turnover and moved the ball 85 yards in 17 seconds. The 85 yard drive was capped off with a 19 yard pass to Josh Foss from Jake Kranz. A two point conversion was unsuccessful. The Rangers then turned over the ball after the kickoff on their own 29 yard line with .06 second left in the half. Kranz put the ball up in the air and Josh Gloppen caught it in the end zone to give the Raiders a 25-6 lead. The ensuing extra point attempt was blocked. ìHastings is a good team and you just canít give up turnovers to a team like that,î Rangers head coach Jim Herman said. ìWith a good team, when they score you have to answer back. We answered back with turnovers.î The second half was a bit closer even though the Raiders scored 12 more points in the third quarter off a 73 yard touchdown run by Joe Welch and a 16 yard run by Bobby Schmitz. After both Raiders touchdowns, Wadzinskiís extra point attempts were no good. In the fourth quarter Trip Schultz scored from four yards out and the ensuing two point conversion failed so the Rangers trailed 37-12. The touchdown capped off a nine play, 64 yard drive that took 8:55 off the clock. With the game all but over, Dustin Kendrick scored from one yard out to cap off an 11 play, 69 yard drive. Mobergís extra point was good, making the final score 37-19. ìHastings runs the ball well and I thought for the most part we handled that well,î Herman said. ìIn the passing game though their offensive line protects their quarterback, giving him time to find an open receiver.î Trip Schultz had another strong game for the Rangers, rushing for 108 yards, bringing his season total to 580 yards. Schwietz ran for 72 yards and one touchdown as well. The Rangers next game is Friday at home against Stillwater at 7 p.m. |
