Suspension mars FLHS Homecoming

After Chantel Eischen was crowned the 2004 homecoming queen, king candidate Ken Janssen took the microphone to address his fellow classmates and tell them he could not be the king.

Janssen told the students that he had performed an inappropriate dance during Fridayís lunch hour and because of that he was asked to resign as a king candidate

Earlier in the day Janssen agreed to do just that, but changed his mind. Janssen said because of his actions he was then told he was being disqualified. The student, a reserve football player, was also suspended from the team for Fridayís game.

Amid some boos, Janssen dropped the microphone and walked across the gym as he left the pepfest.
Clay Harrison was named the 2004 homecoming king.

ěThe events that we have at school, including pepfest and homecoming, are extensions of our school so they must uphold and represent our standard for student behavior,î Forest Lake High School Principal Steve Massey said. ěIt represents what we stand for and what our policies and expectations are for student behavior. The homecoming, pep fest and other events throughout the year are an example of what we endorse as a school system.î

After Jannsen left the gym there were chants of, ěKennyís number one,î looks of dissappointment on student faces, but there were still plenty upbeat attitudes as many of the students werenít going to let this little speed bump in the road ruin the event.

ěThe bottom line is we had an awesome week,î Massey said. ěThe kids had the spirit throughout the school and the spirit throughout the week was very positive. The pride the kids have in their school and the pride and support the community has for the school system is impressive.î

Students had plenty of events to keep them occupied from a powder puff football game on Monday, a battle of the bands on Tuesday and an indoor movie night on Thursday with the culmination of events ending with Fridayís pepfest and football game.
At the pep fest there was a performance by the dance line who was later joined by a group of football players as entertainment. There was a pop drinking contest won by the junior class, and the coronation. After school there was, of course, the football game which drew a large crowd.

ěI cannot believe how many people turned out for the football game,î Activities Director Joel Olson said. ěIt was a big crowd even though it was chilly out.î

A win by the football team would have made for the perfect ending of homecoming week, but Hastings played spoiler, winning the game 37-19.
