If Lowell Schweigert were to describe the events of September 26, 2004, he would say he was doing his jobóand doing it better thanks to the talents of his teammates on the Forest Lake Police Department.

But at Mondayís Forest Lake City Council meeting, Washington County Sheriff Jim Frank took the time to call attention to Schweigertís efforts that day.

The retiring sheriff presented the part time officer with the Life Saving Award, for his acts of bravery for saving a life of an injured driver in a car crash on US-61 near Hugo. The car was in flames when Schweigert, with the assistance of other officers, was able to pull the individual from the burning car.

ìIf they still make officers like Officer Schweigert then Iím being replaced very well,î Frank said.

Schweigert, who brought his family to the council meeting, where he received a standing ovation for his efforts, said the award meant a lot to him.

ìI couldnít have done it without the help of Forest Lake Police Officers and Washington County officers,î he said. ìI donít think I could have done it on my own.î
