Girls hockey starts a winning streak

It took the Forest Lake High School girls hockey team five games to record their first victory after four close losses. After that first victory they three more close games, but this past week they may have turned things around with back to back victories.

ìWeíre not playing ranked teams right now so that helps,î Rangers head coach Paul Kendrick said.

The Rangers started the week last Tuesday with a 6-0 whitewash of Duluth Central/Denfeld.

ìI think the girls knew going into the game that we should expect to win this one and they did,î Kendrick said. ìThe girls went about their business and played a nice solid game.î

Sophomore goalie Cassie Carpenter stopped all 27 shots in the Rangers victory, earning her first shutout of the year.
Sophomore Torri Shelafoe scored a hat trick as she netted three goals in the victory.

ìTorri has been playing well but couldnít score,î Kendrick said. ìWhen she does finally break the ice she does it with a three goal game, so that was nice for her and her line to get on line.î

The other three goals came from Sophomore Alexa Nelson, Charise Kendrick and senior Anna Johnson.

The Rangers were able to continue their winning ways last Thursday when they defeated Suburban East Conference foe Park (Cottage Grove) 5-1.

Shelafoe gave the Rangers an early lead with a goal just over five minuted into the game. Nelson added another later in the first period, giving the Rangers some breathing room.

Sophomore Kathy Crudo and freshman Quinne Patchin each added goals in the second period and Nelson added another goal in the third period.

Sophomore goalie Kim Frerick stopped 15 of the 16 shots she faced in the victory.

ìOur goalies both have a 92 percent save percentage as theyíve both played in five games,î Kendrick said. ìCassie has a 2.02 goals against average and Kim has a 2.40. Theyíre both playing exceptionally well and theyíre going to help us win some games.î

The Rangers next game is today, Thursday, when they play St. Francis/North Branch at 7:30 p.m. at East Bethel Arena.
