The Forest Lake High School boys nordic ski team remained perfect with a first place finish at Trollhaugen, while the girls won their second consecutive race in the same meet.
Ben Fick led the boys team as he won his third race in a row with a time of 24:54. Fick, Ted Steiner, Zac Clark and Leif Nordgren combined for a total of 319 points out of a possible 394.
ìAs impressive as our top four were, they were followed closely by sophomore Travis Strike and senior captain Jamison Hull,î Rangers head coach Deno Johnson said.
On the girls side of things, sophomore Annie Dehmlow took first with a time of 34:05 and Kristi Jo Buerkle took third.
USSA events
Fick won the Junior One age class in Houghton, MI, when he won both the 10K classic race Saturday and the 10K freestyle race Sunday. Fickís times were fast enough to put him in the top five in the collegiate races.
Fickís next race on the USSA circuit is the national championships in Heber City, UT, Jan. 3-10.
Fick wasnít the only Ranger competing on the USSA circuit this week. Steiner had two top ten finishes in the Older Junior age classes, while Nordgren and Clark had some top ten finishes in the Junior One age class.
Dehmlow won both her races, securing herself a spot on the Midwest junior national team. Kate Babbitt was fifth in the classic race and ninth in the skate race.
A total of 12 Rangers raced in the USSA Christmas Classic races.
ìThis group is off to a satisfying start,î Johnson said. ìWe had two athletes qualify to race at junior nationals already with three more USSA weekends to go.î
