Boys swim team places 5th at SEC relays

The Forest Lake High School boys swimming and diving team opened the season with a fifth place finish at Suburban East Conference Relays in Stillwater Dec. 8. Woodbury was first at the meet with a 126, Stillwater 122, Mounds View 114, Cretin Durham Hall 80, Forest Lake 70, Hastings 60, Park (Cottage Grove) 54, and Roseville at 34.
The Rangers had a single first place finish from the diving team of Dillon Hudalla and Jeff Isaacson. Hudallaís and Isaacsonís combined score of 201.60 points set a new conference relay meet record.
Other notable finishes for the Rangers was a third place finish for the 400 yard individual medley relay team of Tyler Sperry, Mark Sandager, Elijah Miller and Sam Gort, a fourth place finish for the 800 yard freestyle relay team of Peter Sandager, Miller, Mark Sandager, and Gort, and a fifth place finish for the 200 yard backstroke relay team of Kevin Lalla, Frank OíNeil, Clint Krummi, and John Gavanda.
Last Thursday the Rangers hosted their first dual meet when they welcomed SEC newcomer Cretin-Derham Hall. Cretin-Derham Hall played spoiler in a meet in which the lead changed five times over the 12 events with the final at 97-88.
The Rangers had first place finishes from Gort in the 200 yard freestyle with a time of 1:51.95, and 500 yard freestyle with a time of 5:06.94. Dillon Hudalla took first in diving with 225.35 points, and the 200 yard freestyle relay team of John Gavanda, Mark Sandager, Elijah Miller, and Gort took first with a time of 1:38.10.
Mark Sandager took second with a time of 1:00.29 in the 100 yard backstroke, a tenth of a second ahead of third place.
Others placing second included Jacob Waskey in the 50 yard (24.80) and 100 yard freestyle (55.42); Jeff Isaacson in diving (153.35); Mark Sandager in the 100 yard butterfly (58.85); and the 400 yard free relay team of Gavanda, Mark Sandager, Miller, and Gort (3:38.73).
Third place finishes included the 200 yard medley relay team of Clint Krummi, Tyler Sperry, Zach Curtis, and Waskey (1:57.92); Peter Sandager in the 200 yard freestyle (2:07.82); Sperry in the 200 yard individual medley (2:28.96), Gavanda in the 50 yard (25.34) and 100 yard freestyle (56.89); Miller in the 100 yard butterfly (1:02.09) and 100 yard backstroke (1:02.74); and the 400 yard freestyle relay team of Waskey, Peter Sandager, John Goossens, and Sperry (3:46.77).
Saturday the Rangers attended the Blaine Invitational at Northdale Middle School. The Rangers held third place in the eight team field for a majority of the meet but slipped to fourth in the second to last event, where they finished.
Stillwater won the meet with 428.50 points with Hopkins in second with 421 points, then Anoka with 265, Forest Lake 254, followed by Blaine 226, Champlin Park 208, Coon Rapids 191.50 and Osseo with 109 points.
The Rangers only first place finish came from Gort in the 200 yard (1:49.87) and 500 yard freestyle (5:06.09).
The Rangers had second place finishes from Hudalla in diving (357.60), and Miller in the 100 yard backstroke (1:00.36). A third place finish was garnered by the 400 yard free relay team of Gavanda, Miller, Mark Sandager, and Gort (3:35.32). John Goossens was fourth in the 50 yard freestyle (24.64) as was the 200 yard freestyle relay team of Curtis, Goossens, Matt Elden, and Gavanda (1:41.63).
The 200 yard medley relay team of Mark Sandager, Goossens, Miller, and Gort was fifth (1:52.61) as was Mark Sandager in the 100 yard butterfly (1:00.38). Miller was seventh in the 200 yard individual medley (2:17.77).
The Rangers will host an alumni meet Dec. 29 at 6 p.m., and has its next dual and conference meet on Thursday, Jan. 5 at 6 p.m. against Park (Cottage Grove). The team is hosting a Food Drive so fans at the alumni meet are encouraged to bring food donations.
