School policy on drugs under review

A new policy in ISD 831 that is focused on drugs in school will have a second review in January with possible new language following the school board's first review on Thursday, Dec. 1. The school and its policy committee is considering Policy 418 ó Drug-Free Workplace/Drug-Free School. The purpose of the policy is to maintain a safe and healthful environment for employees and students by prohibiting the use of alcohol, toxic substances and controlled substances without a physicians prescription. A new topic for the policy surfaced Dec. 1 when board Joe Grafft asked about the inclusion of random drug-testing of athletes when coaches or school officials have suspicions that a student may be using a drug. Ron Spies, director of administration and human resources, will review the topic for a report to the school board at its Thursday, Jan. 5, 2006 meeting.
