Scrabble as a hobby turns into a club

What started out as a hobby has turned into a club.
ìWe religiously started playing Scrabble about four years ago,î explained Wyoming resident Verna Best, of family and friends.
Playing the classic word-spelling game became a regular event in 2004, as Best and four other friends took turns hosting the Scrabble sessions at their homes.
The friends had originally met through a cribbage group.
ìWe all figured out that we had Scrabble in common,î said Best.
Now, the host of their Scrabble sessions is Kodiak Coffee in Forest Lake.
The group meets from 1 to 4 p.m. on the first and third Sunday of the month and they encourage other area Scrabble enthusiasts to join in.
The game style of the group is ìwinners play the winners,î but Best stressed the sessions are just for fun and socialization.
ìItís not like itís a tournament where you donít talk,î she said. ìItís just a good social environment.î
People of all ages are invited to take part in the gathering, which is free. According to Best, just stop on by.
ìTheyíll see us, because we have the board,î she mentioned.
She also has a recommendation.
ìIf anyone had a board, especially a turn top one, bring it along,î Best added.
The next Scrabble session is scheduled for Dec. 18. For more information, contact Best at 651-462-8027.
The groupís current members are looking forward to expanding membership.
ìI know thereís people out there that play,î said Best.
She has set a potential goal for the group as well.
ìEventually, we may like to get Scrabble T-shirts,î Best commented.
For now though, she just intends on continuing with her hobby.
Besides the fun she has during Scrabble gatherings, Best suggested there is a health benefit to playing the game as well.
ìItís a good way to stay sharp, mentally,î she said.
