Alpine team falls in conference opener

Both the Rangers varsity boys and girls Alpine ski teams were defeated by Stillwater in their first conference meet Jan. 6 at Afton Alps.

The boys team raced strong, but lost 26-29, with co-captains Aaron Moen and Erik Stolberg taking second and third place, respectively, with combined times of 43.31 and 44.41. The top time was 43.24. Three other Ranger boys placed: Tim Kisrow 7th with 47.85, Brett Stolberg 8th with 47.92 and Kevin Gamelin 9th with 48.07.

The Ranger girls lost 11-44, with co-captain Amanda Connelly's 62.62 combined time only good enough for a sixth place finish. The top time was 54.71. Other Ranger girls who placed were Carly Bass 8th with 67.20, co-captain Kelly Haglund 9th with 67.89 and Catie Schmidt 10th with 68.04.

ìThe courses were extremely icy,î said Head Coach Annie Dahl. ìOnly two of our girls had stand-up runs both times. The falls took precious seconds away. While some of our boys took falls, too, they managed to hold their own, losing by just three points. We're eager to get out there again and prove ourselves with better conditions.î

The skiers were also competing against non-conference Blake at the meet. The boys won against Blake 29-26, taking six of the top 10 spots. The girls lost to Blake 26-29, but took five of the top 10 spots.
