The start of Suburban East Conference play didnít quite start off the way the Forest Lake High School boys basketball team may have hoped it would when they lost 54-46 to Park (Cottage Grove) Friday night.
Park (Cottage Grove) jumped out to a 14-7 first quarter lead. The Rangers battled back to outscore Park (Cottage Grove) 20-14 in the second quarter to pull within one at the half as the score was 28-27 Park (Cottage Grove).
The Rangers stayed close in the third quarter as the two teams entered the fourth with the score 40-38 Park (Cottage Grove). Park (Cottage Grove) pulled away in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Rangers 14-8 to win the game 54-46.
ìPark (Cottage Grove) got out to a quick lead and we had to work our way back into the game,î Rangers head coach Chuck Gunderson said. ìI was really proud of the way our guys played and I thought we really picked up the intensity level.î
Aaron Jacobs led the Rangers in scoring with 13 points, followed by Josh Williams, Noah Lawson and Drew Cremisno who all had seven points apiece.
ìNate and Aaron did a really nice job of getting the ball in the post, then dishing it out to the perimeter,î Gunderson said.
Last Tuesday the Rangers got one final tuneup before SEC play when they hosted Irondale. A 23 point second quarter outburst by the Rangers propelled them to a 60-49 victory.
ìWe played well and got better at things that we needed to get better at,î Gunderson said. ìOnce we got ahead by a bit we had a little bit of a lapse, but we came back.î
Robertson led the Rangers with 20 points, followed by Matt Handsmann who had 10 and Cremisno who scored seven.
ìIrondale was giving up a lot of fast break baskets,î Gunderson said. ìNate ran the ball well and we hit him on about three fast break baskets. For a post guy thatís not bad.î
The Rangers next game is Friday when they host Hastings at 7:30 p.m.
