Forest Lake lost a close dual meet at Mounds View 54-48 Thursday, Jan. 6. This was Forest Lake's first dual meet loss this year.
Though Forest Lake took the loss, head swimming coach Barb Vailodash and diving coach Deb Welch were pleased with the swimmers and divers results. Vailodash said many of the swimmers are approaching their sections times of late last year and it is only the middle of the season. Many of the swimmers achieved personal bests at the meet.
Forest Lake was led by Sam Gort and Andy Knaak who each took first in two individual events. Gort took first in the 200 free and 500 free, and Knaak took first in the 100 free and 100 breaststroke. Each were also part of a relay that placed first and second. Gort was a member of the second place 200 free relay, and Knaak a member of the second place 200 medley relay team. Both were part of the first place 400 free relay team as well.
Mark Sandager would have done similar placing first in the 100 backstroke and first in the 200 individual medley but was disqualified for an improper turn in the 200 individual medley. He was also part of the first place 400 free relay and second place 200 individual medley relay teams. Coach Vailodash, though initially unhappy with the disqualification, saw
Sandager swimming a great race and expects that the incident will actually help Sandager down the road.
Mark Anderson placed second in two individual events, the 200 free and 500 free. Anderson was also part of the second place 200 free relay and the third place 400 free relay. Jake Morrison garnered two third place finishes in the 200 individual medley and the 100 backstroke. Morrison was also part of second place relay teams in the 200 medley and 200 free. James Kassel took third in the 100 fly and in the 400 free relay. Elijah Miller placed third in the 50 free and fourth in the 100 fly. Miller also was part of the second place 200 medley and the third place 400-relay team.
Matt Elden placed fourth in the 50 free and 100 free. Elden was also part of the first place 400 relay and the second place 200 free relay team. John Goossens was part of the third place 400-relay team.
The divers did their part. Dillon Hudalla finished first with a score of 191.85. Diver Jeff Isaacson who placed third with a score of 150.20 joined Hudalla.
