Each year the Minnesota State High School League nominates one boy and one girl from each school for the Triple ìAî Award. This year Sarah Wright and Clay Harrison have been nominated from Forest Lake High School.
To be considered for the Triple ìAî Award, a student must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0, be a high school senior, participate in a MSHSL sponsored sport or fine art activity and comply with the MSHSLís student code of conduct.
Apart from keeping her grades up, Wright is a member of the Rangers nordic ski team, on the student council, participates in drama, sings in the choir and plays both the piano and flute. Harrison is a National Honors Society member, plays in the school band, coaches youth wrestling and is a member of the Rangers wrestling team.
Between the two, their many involvements take up a lot of valuable time. Wright spends plenty of time on a bus going to and from ski practice, Harrison spends his time on the mat practicing or coaching wrestling, then throw in school work and the two have almost no time to themselves.
ìDonít worry about sleep in high school because thatís what the summer is for,î Harrison said. ìThe key is to make sure youíre all caught up in all your classes first because if you start falling behind thatíll make everything else miserable.î
Wright and Harrison have figured out a way to manage their time and manage it effectively. Wright says it all comes down to time management and for her that means ski practice, working on her music, then homework each night. Harrison says he does his work when itís supposed to be done. If it takes more time then you make time for it.
With everything Wright and Harrison have going on in their lives, they really didnít take the time to fully understand their Triple ìAî nominations.
ìI didnít even realize other people from the school had applications like I did,î Wright said.
ìI donít really think itís special because Iíve been doing this stuff for a long time,î Harrison said.
Through the whole application process, and through their lives, Wright and Harrisonís parents have been there to support them.
ìTheyíve never been those pushy parents,î Wright said of her parents. ìThey always support me , but I donít think I have ever raced without one of them there. They will do anything they need to without being pushy.î
Harrison says his parents have been the same way. He said that once he got into wrestling in eighth grade his parents really got involved and their support is not just for him, but for the entire team.
Now that they have been nominated, Wright and Harrison will go through a multi-level process that includes member schools of the MSHSL, MSHSL administrators, a special committee of educators, business leaders, and members from athletic and fine arts committee. Award winners will be announced in March at the Triple ìAî banquet.
