Forest Lake High School boys basketball coach Chuck Gunderson was looking forward to the Orono Holiday Tournament and expected the Rangers to compete well. The Rangers did more than just compete well, they won the tournament.

ìIt was a good week for us because we faced a team that played a half court man, half court zone and another one that played man to man and another team that played zone systems,î Gunderson said. ìIt was nice for our guys to see everything and it was nice to see them win every game. More importantly it was nice to see those guys test the waters and do well.î

In the first game the Rangers defeated Mound Westonka 57-31. Three Rangers players hit double digits in scoring. Noah Lawson scored 12 points while Aaron Jacobs and Nate Robertson each had 10 points.

In the second game of the tournament, the Rangers were down 38-33 going into the fourth quarter, but a 17-6 quarter propelled them over host Orono 50-44.

ìRobert Gavanda hit a game winning shot for us,î Gunderson said. ìIt was nice to see him step up and hit the big shot.î

Josh Williams led the Rangers in scoring in the Orono game with 14 points. Drew Cremisino, Jacobs and Lawson each had seven points.

In the final game of the tournament all the Rangers needed to do was beat Breck to win the tournament title. The Rangers took a 12-9 lead after the first quarter and didnít look back from there as they went on to win 50-46.

Robertson scored 21 points in the game and Cremisino scored 16.

The Rangers now open up their Suburban East Conference schedule with a game at Park (Cottage Grove) Friday at 7:30 p.m.

ìEvery team except us and White Bear Lake has a winning record right now,î Gunderson said. ìThe conference is going to be a tough, tough conference and weíre going to be challenged. Hopefully weíll continue to get better.î
