The Forest Lake VFW baseball team has quietly played its way into second place with a 7-4 record in league play.
ìThe boys are doing very good,î VFW coach Jim Bourque said. ìThe team is a bunch of blue collar pluggers and they play great team ball. We have no real standout because they all do the routine things consistently.î
The VFW team started the week with a 2-0 victory over Cambridge last Wednesday. Brady Banse earned the victory for Forest Lake with run support coming from Miles Carlson who drove in Ben Gort to give them the lead.
Nate Crudo was 2-3 in the game as was Brett Johnson.
Over the weekend the VFW team participated in the Alexandria Tournament, but didnít fare so well.
ìIt was the worst weekend weíve had so far,î Borque said.
Forest Lake started the tournament with a 8-6 loss to Moorhead.
ìWe had great pitching from (Brady) Banse,î Bourque said. ìWe just didnít get the job done.î
Joe Berger was 3-4 in the game with a double and two singles while Steve Bonjes was 2-3.
Forest Lake then went on to lose to Willmar 7-3, then again to New Ulm 10-3.
ìWe just absolutely ran out of pitching and it was degrees out and we had nobody on the mound,î Borque said.
The team will shake off their disappointing weekend as they play five games between Tuesday and Saturday. Forest Lake played a double header Tuesday night at The Ballpark at Schumacher Field against Andover. Theyíll be home again Friday night when they host Centennial then again Saturday at 1 p.m. when they host Elk River.
