Trees removed from Lakeside Park

More than 30 trees were removed from Lakeside Park by construction crews last Wednesday. Many of the trees removed were diseased, but others were removed as part of the parkís renovation project. The renovation includes bringing in dirt to improve drainage and remove low spots that collect water. In many places, that means up to three feet of fill will be brought in to cover the existing ground level. According to Forest Lake City Administrator Chip Robinson the amount of fill would have surely threatened the survivability of existing trees and almost certainly killed them off within the next few years. Most tree roots grow in the top 18 inches of soil, and they need oxygen from the surface to survive.
