In their final regular season match-up of the season Forest Lake American Legion Post 225 hosted Stillwater in a double header last Thursday at The Ballpark at Schumacher Field.
The game was scoreless until the fourth inning when Post 225 took the lead. Jeff Brooks led off the inning with a double, followed by a single by Trip Schultz to score Brooks. Schultz was thrown out attempting to steal second base, but Andrew Pooch drew a walk, followed by an Erik Zentzis single. Andy Norbin drove Pooch home.
Post 225 added two more runs in the fifth inning when Bobby Hagar started the inning with a single. Jed Hanson singled, then a fielders choice by Schultz led to runners at first and third. Pooch drove a double to center field that scored both runners.
Stillwater got on the board in a big way in the sixth inning when they scored five runs, after a throwing error by Post 225. The game ended 5-4 and Post 225 was unable to score in the seventh.
ìIt was another close game and weíve struggled in close games,î Post 225 coach Kale Henry said. ìWe made a mistake in the field and Stillwater capitalized on it to get things rolling and we couldnít bounce back.î
In the second game of the double header Post 225 took a first inning lead when Pooch hit an RBI single to score Kyle Johnson.
ìPoochís been swinging the bat well lately,î Henry said. ìEven when heís making outs heís just killing the ball.î
Stillwater tied the game in the fourth inning and added another in the fifth to take the lead.
Post 225 bounced back in the bottom of the fifth when Handson lead off with a single and later scored on a wild pitch.
David Guarkee lead off the sixth inning with a single, advanced to second on a bunt and Schultz reached first on a single, putting runners on first and second. Indecision on the base path lead to a double play when a ball was in the air.
ìTrip (Schultz) read the situation as the go ahead to run, but David (Guarkee) had some hesitation and it resulted in a double play,î Henry said.
Stillwater scored a run in the seventh inning to take the lead and win the game 3-2.
ìIt was another one run loss,î Henry said. ìItís kind of been a theme for us in close games and we havenít been able to find a way to win.î
In a tune-up for the playoffs Post 225 played a nine inning playoff rule exhibition with North End. The game ended in a 8-8 tie after North End got a three run home run in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game.
