Mickey Mantle team off to slow start

The Forest Lake Mickey Mantle team is off to a slow start as theyíve started out 2-3.

The Forest Lake team startd the season with a 6-3 loss to Anoka/Ramsey earlier in the month. The next day Champlin Park got the best of Forest Lake as they won 4-1.

The first win of the season for the Forest Lake team came at the hands of Blaine as the Forest Lake team won 8-5. the Forest Lake team continued their winning ways with a 11-3 win over Tri-City in five innings.

ìWeíre coming around,î Head Coach Shane Speas said. ìWeíve made a lot of errors in our first few games, but when we win weíve made less than two erros. If we play sound baseball weíll be OK.î

The the Forest Lake teamís last game was last Thursday when they fell to Coon Rapids 6-3.

The Forest Lake teamís pitching rotation includes Brent Kolbow, Pat Larson, Jess Nordstrom and Matt Zidar.

ìTheyíre doing good and theyíre throwing strikes,î Spears said.

Kolbow is the teamís ace and is one of the leaders at the plate as well. Kolbow is hitting around .480 on the season.

Other Forest Lake players who are producing at the plate include Alec Johnson whoís hitting around .420 with an onbase percentage near .520. Larson is hitting around .390 with an on base percentage near .460.

ìWe steal a lot of bases becasue weíre agressive and we have kids who can run,î Spears said. ìThat is helping because itís keeping other teams on their toes and throwing the ball around.î

The teamís next game is today, Thursday, as they host Osseo at 6 p.m. All home games are at the Forest Lake High School baseball field. The teamís first tournament of the season is this weekend when they compete in the Mahtomedi Tournament Friday through Sunday.
