Last week was quite a week for Forest Lake High School senior Noah Lawson as he competed in the State Golf Tournament and graduated.
Lawsonís memorable week started on Tuesday, day one, of the State Golf Meet. Things didnít quite start on time as thunder storms delayed the start of the tournament almost two hours.
After the first nine holes Lawson was in the mix with a score of 39, three over par. On the back nine Lawson kicked things into high gear, sinking a few birdies to finish the round with a 31 and 18 hole total of 70 which was good for two under par.
Lawsonís score of 70 put him in a two way tie for first place with Trent Peterson of Eagan.
ìIt was a good feeling to be tied for the best person in the state,î Lawson said. ìI was kind of an underdog so it felt good to come in and shoot a 70.î
Day two of the State Golf Tournament looked as though it would have a delayed start as well as the rain was pouring down, but since there was no lightning in the area, officials started things on time.
Lawson had some trouble with his first hole, scoring a bogey, but bounced back with a birdie on the next hole. By the time Lawson was on the fourth hole the rain had stopped and the sun was shining.
After the first nine holes of day two Lawson had a 38 and was even par for the tournament.
ìI just figured I needed to get off to a good start and I did,î Lawson said. ìI recovered after that first hole and kept the ball in play.î
Rangers golf coach John Buck said after the first nine holes of day two that as long as Lawson stayed near par heíd be in contention to finish in the top five.
Lawson had some trouble on the last nine holes, shooting a 39 to finish the day with a 77, giving him a two day total of 147.
ìMy putts werenít dropping so I was figuring I needed some birdies on the back nine to go in, but I couldnít get them to drop,î Lawson said.
Lawsonís score of 147 put him in fifth place for the tournament. Peterson and his teammate Ryan Peterson of Eagan tied for first place with scores of 141.
ìI was trying to finish in the top ten,î Lawson said. ìI thought I could have won it though if I played good.î
To top off his week, a day after finishing fifth at the State Golf Tournament, Lawson walked across the stage to receive his high school diploma. He will now attend Oklahoma Christian to major in business and golf next year.
