Rangers win 7AAA opener

Forest Lake High School baseball coach Brian Raabe has been saying all season long that good pitching, strong defense and timely hitting will win games. Tuesday night in their Section 7AAA opener the Rangers got all three as they defeated Elk River 6-0.

The Rangers got on the board in the bottom of the second inning when Erik Zentzis hit a run scoring single. The Rangers added another run in the third inning when Jeff Brooks hit a run scoring single of his own.

In the bottom of the fifth inning the Rangers loaded the bases and Patrick Fogerty was at the plate. Fogerty drove the ball down the first base line, clearing the bases in what turned out to be a double making the score 5-0 Rangers.

The home plate umpire initially indicated that the ball was foul, but then ruled it fair. The Elk River coaching staff was not happy and disputed the call. In the end the ruling stood and the Rangers had their 5-0 lead.

Elk River came closest to getting on the score board in the top of the sixth inning when they loaded the bases with two outs, but Rangers pitcher Jed Hanson struck out the Elk River batter to end the threat.

Bobby Hager hit a run scoring single in the bottom of the sixth to add some insurance to the Rangers lead.
Hanson pitched a complete game shutout, giving up only five hits in the game.

The win advances the Rangers in Section 7AAA play. They now play Anoka Thursday at The Ballpark at Schumacher Field at 4:30 p.m. Anoka beat Cambridge-Isanti 6-5 in the opening round of Section 7AAA play. A reminder to fans, since the game is a playoff game admission is not free. Adults are $6 and seniors and students are $4.
