Luke Odegaard lost only his second match of the season, but that didnít matter as the Forest Lake High School boys tennis team defeated Princeton 5-2 in the first round of Section 7AA play.
Odegaard lost 4-6, 1-6 to German exchange student Patrick Strauss.
ìHe (Strauss) is the best player ever to play at Princeton,î Rangers head coach Greg Patchin said.
Chris Sobieck of the Rangers defeated Jay Lilla 6-1, 6-0, while Dan Cromwell defeated John Boettchner 6-2, 6-1 to give the Rangers a 2-1 lead.
Jeff Kohler gave the Rangers some breathing room when he defeated Lee Miller 6-0, 6-1 to close out singles play.
In doubles play Tom Kling and Matt Peterson lost 6-4, 4-6, 6-7, but Rob and Sammy Steiner won 6-1, 6-0 and Chris Albee and freshman Spencer Conrad won 7-5, 6-3.
The win advances the Rangers to the final four in Hibbing. The Rangers take on Duluth East. (Editors Note: The Rangers match against Duluth East was played Tuesday after the Times deadline. Results will be in the next issue.)
ìWe have a daunting task in trying to upset three time defending section champion Duluth East,î Patchin said. ìWe are prepared and accept the challenge. The boys worked hard and sometimes weird things happen in section play.î
In individual section play Odegaard and the one singles teams of Kling and Sammy Steiner and Sobieck and Cromwell have advanced.
