Hospitals considered for the award were top performers in one of five clinical areas: heart failure, community acquired pneumonia (CAP), acute myocardial infarction (AMI), coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) and total joint replacement of the hip and knee.

Hospitals that submitted data to Premierís clinical comparative database between July 2003 and June 2004 were eligible for the 2005 award. Fairview Lakes was one of only a handful of participants to achieve awards in two of the five categories.
