Seat belt saturation nets 25 tickets
A seat belt enforcement campaign by city of Forest Lake police has netted 25 citations for seat belt violations and a host of related moving violations tickets.
Officers from the Forest Lake Police Department utilized state grant dollars funded through the Washington County Sheriffís Office to conduct saturation patrols starting May 23 and ending June 5. The intent of the program was to enforce state rules requiring seat belt use.
Sgt. Ron Hanegraaf said the special details resulted in a total of 25 citations for seat belt violations.
A long standing trouble spot ó SW 12th St. and W. Broadway Ave. (CR-2) ó upheld its infamous reputation, the officer said.
During a one-hour saturation of the intersection last Thursday, a detail of five officers issued 16 citations for disobeying a semaphore along with 10 seat belt violations.
The Broadway-12th St. intersection has the highest crash rate for any county highway, county officials report.
During the extended patrols at various intersections in Forest Lake, the 25 seat belt violations were matched with 16 semaphore violations and seven speeding tickets, Hanegraaf said. During one four-hour patrol last week, 33 tickets were issued.
