Fire destroyed a garage at 17414 Potomac St. in Columbus Township Tuesday afternoon. The fire destroyed the front half of the garage and there was extensive damage to the rear third. The house suffered minimal damage from water. Forest Lake Fire Chief Gary Sigfrinius said the house was on the verge of ignition when fire crews arrived. Crews sprayed cold water onto the house, breaking some of the glass. Damage is estimated at $20,000. The garage was vacant at the time of the fire and a passerby knocked on the door to let the homeowner know the garage was on fire. Wyoming Fire Department was on standby at the Forest Lake fire station and sent some manpower to the scene. The cause of the fire is undetermined as the level of destruction at the point of origin was too great to allow for a direct cause to be determined, Sigfrinius said.
