Kolbow takes second at state

Forest Lake High School wrestler Jordan Kolbow took his undefeated record to the class AAA individual state tournament. Kolbow finished second in his weight class with All-State honors.

Kolbow, wrestling at 145 lbs. opened the tournament against Nick Galles of South St. Paul. Kolbow won a 9-2 decision to move on. In the second round Kolbow had little trouble with Brent Basinski of Spring Lake Park as he beat him 10-2.

In the semifinals Kolbow faced Andy Leisen of Rochester Mayo. Kolbow won a close 5-4 decision to move on to the championship match against defending state champion Mitch Millner of Simley. Millner handed Kolbow his first loss of the season with a 9-6 decision win.

With the loss to Millner, Kolbow placed second at 145 lbs., earning All-State honors with an impressive season record of 37-1. Kolbow led the team in decisions with 16, takedowns with 133, first takedowns with 31, two-point near falls with 19 and tied for first in major decisions with six. Kolbow was second on the team in three-point falls with 14 and team points with 158.

The other Rangers wrestler to compete in the individual state tournament was Patrick Taylor. Taylor wrestled at 140 lbs.

In the opening round, Taylor beat Zach Juusola of Minneapolis Edison with a fall 5:23 into the match. Jarred McCarthy of Farmington sent Taylor to the wrestle back bracket as he beat him with a fall 4:55 into their second round match.

Taylor won his first wrestle back match against Chris Rother of Irondale 6-1, but lost to Greg Skerik of Bemidji 8-6 to bring an end to his season.

Taylor finished the season with a record of 34-3.
Taylor led the team in team points with 177, falls with 22 and tied for first in major decisions with six. Taylor was second on the team in takedowns with 78 and third with first takedowns with 27.
