5 ESL classes under review in ISD 831
The ISD 831 Board of Education will likely grant approval to the creation of five new English as a Second Language classes for students in grades 7-12 at its next regular meeting on Dec. 1. The move has been recommended by the administration in response to the growing number of students qualifying for ESL services. The new courses are designed to provide consistency at each of the four secondary buildings as the district serves its English language learners. Courses are based on the Minnesota State English Language Proficiency Standards. The five courses were up for first reading at the Nov. 8 meeting and will come back for possible final action next month. The districtís number of Limited English Proficient students stands at 84 as of Oct. 1 of this year. In 2002, the student count was 29.
