Volleyball takes 3rd at CDH Invite

A week after taking first place in the Duluth East Invitational the Forest Lake High School volleyball team took third at the Cretin-Derham Hall Invitational over the weekend.

The Rangers opened the Cretin-Derham Hall Invitational with a 25-15, 25-14 victory over Farmington, but then lost to the eventual invite champion Andover 25-18, 25-15.

ìWe didnít play our best against Andover,î Rangers head coach Sherri Alm said.

The Rangers bounced back with a 25-8, 25-12 victory over St. Peter and claimed third place with a 25-18, 25-17 victory over Highland Park.

During the invitational Megan Becker and Chelsie Sobieck led the Rangers with 19 kills followed by Courtney Trenti who had 18, Pam Nora who had 11 and Kelly Bohnen who had eight.

Nora and Nicole Tetrault led the team with 34 digs apiece and McKenzie Gemeiner had 32. McKenzie had 77 setting assists over the weekend, bringing her season total to 543.

In Suburban East Conference play the Rangers fell to first place Cretin-Derham Hall 25-23, 14-25, 18-25, 25-18, 9-15 at Cretin-Derham Hall.

ìThe team really pulled together and did some nice things,î Alm said. ìCretin is a tall, hard hitting team and we really passed pretty well and made some amazing digs.î

In the loss to Cretin-Derham Hall Nora led the Rangers with 12 kills while Sobieck had 11 and Becker added seven. Nora also led the Rangers in digs with 20, followed by McKenzie who had 15 and Tetrault who had 13.
The Rangers returned home last Thursday when they hosted Mounds View on a night that recognized the community education volleyball players.

ìMounds View has several huge players, one being 6í5î,î Alm said.

After dropping the first , but bounced back to win the next three games, 25-20, 26-24, 25-22.

Becker led the Rangers offense with 15 kills, while Trenti had 10. Nora had 23 digs, Tetrault 16 and Gemeiner 14 in the victory.

ìWe really played some decent defense to kind of astonish the hard hitting Mounds View offense,î Alm said. ìIt was a great match for homecoming week and for community education night.î

The Rangers are at Woodbury tonight, Thursday, at 7 p.m., but return home Friday when they open section play at 7 p.m.
