FL Mayor to help Family Pathways drive

Forest Lake Mayor Terry Smith will be part of the celebrity participants on Saturday when Gander Mountain in Columbus Township hosts a fund-raising event for the Family Pathways Food Pantry.

The day is being billed as ìMake A Difference Dayî as part of a national day for helping others. The Gander Mountain event will feature area emergency personnel who will join Mayor Smith for the stay on the roof of the store until $10,000 is raised.

ìThe food shelves are empty and we need to do what we can to help,î Smith said this week.

Saturday events are slated 10 a.m. until 10 p.m.

As a major fund-raising event, the day is an effort by Family Pathways to impact the lives of the families served by the Forest Lake agency. Funds will be used for food and services.

Saturday events

The day-long event will include:

ïFree music, ATV rides, police canine unit visits and fire trucks on site for the kids and more.

ïRefreshments for sale, including hotdogs, hamburgers and pop.

ïRaffles for six major door prizes throughout the day.

In addition to the activities at Gander Mountain, Cub Foods, Rainbow Foods, Walgreens and Wal-Mart in Forest Lake and Bruceís Foods in Wyoming will have food drives from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday to help fill food pantry shelves.

Food pantry manager Kathy Hughes said food supplies are in short supply this fall.

With many in the area opening their hearts and pocketbooks to support the needed hurricane relief efforts, donations to Family Pathways have declined, she said.

Saturdayís event will be an opportunity to reverse that trend, she added.

The food pantry is based at Schilling Plaza, 255 Scandia Trail N. (Highway 97).
