Wetterling makes Senate bid official

Within months of closing a bruising campaign, Patty Wetterling has launched a bigger one. Wetterling, a nationally recognized child safety advocate from St. Joseph, formally announced her candidacy for the U.S. Senate on Oct. 9 in St. Cloud. Democrat Wetterling, 55, now joins Hennepin County Attorney Amy Klobuchar and Ford Bell, president of the Minneapolis Heart Institute Foundation, in the scramble for the DFL Party endorsement. Last November, Wetterling lost a 6th District congressional bid to Rep. Mark Kennedy ó Kennedy likely will be the endorsed Republican U.S. Senate candidate. Many speculated that Wetterling, who generally is considered to have done very well in the race, would again set sights on the 6th District. ìI am not running in the Sixth. I am running for the United States Senate,î said Wetterling, speaking in her St. Paul campaign headquarters on Oct. 13. One focus in the early stage of Wetterlingís campaign is the Iraq War.Wetterling is calling for a timed exit strategy for U.S. troops from Iraq. She wants ìthe last bootî out of the country by November, 2006. ó T. W. Budig, ECM Capitol Reporter
