Comfort Lake search continues for body of man who fled police
Authorities in Chisago County continue to drag Comfort Lake in Wyoming Township in search of the body of a Wyoming man who fled from police early Tuesday and is now believed to have drowned. Capt. Keith Hoppe of the Chisago County Sheriffís Office said it is highly possible Edward Gerald Williams, 20, may have drowned. Hoppe said an officer from Lakes Area Police Department had made a traffic stop of a vehicle driven by Williams at 1:10 a.m. Oct. 4 at Heath Ave. and US-8 and was preparing to perform a field sobriety check when Williams fled on foot. He was pursued by officers from LAPD, the Wyoming Police Department, the Sheriff's Office and a K-9 unit from the Forest Lake Police Department but elluded capture. A Minnesota State Patrol helicopter also assisted with the search.
The search turned to the lake when a resident reported a pontoon boat missing. The boat was found in the middle of the lake after it ran out of fuel. A sweatshirt worn by Williams was found on the boat, Hoppe said. ìNo news so far,î Hoppe said on Wednesday. ìWe are not 100 percent sure that he drowned.î He said the search would proceed with the assumption that Williams failed to reach shore after leaving the boat. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the Sheriffís Office at 651-257-4100.
