Wyoming Town Board reviews merger plan

John Behling
Wyoming Township Reporter

At the Wyoming Township Board meeting Tuesday, Sept. 27, board members discussed the impending merger with the city of Wyoming. Currently the two entities are working together on the committee level to work out an agreement that each side will find amicable.

Town Board Chair Roger Elmore said that a proposal will probably not be available to the public by October, as originally planned

However, the process appears to be going smoothly, he said.

ìThey canít believe how well weíre getting along,î Supervisor Mark Utecht said referring to the city and township lawyers who are working on the proposal.

Heath Ave. work

The paving of Heath Avenue might be combined with two impending road improvement projects, with the aim of lowering the total cost.

Town Engineer Mark Erichson reported that bids for resurfacing 243rd and 244th streets came in higher than expected and that in view of a current petition to pave Itasca Avenue, the board should wait to award the bid.

The board decided it would be best to hold the decision and see if costs can be lowered by combining it with the Itasca project, if it goes through, and if not, possibly making it part of the Heath project. Combining all three projects was also discussed.

Chisago County recently held public information meetings to discuss upcoming changes in its comprehensive plan. Itís possible the county will adopt a new plan that will designate certain unincorporated areas as urban expansion areas where sewer and water services are expected to be available in the next 25-30 years.

The areas would most likely have annexation agreements with neighboring cities.

The plan is aimed at securing space for cities to expand.

Itís not clear whether changes in the Chisago County Comprehensive Plan will take place before an merger of Wyoming Township and the city of Wyoming.

If the merger happens first, the changesówhich for the most part only affect townshipsówill not apply. If not, the township will need to make some changes to its current zoning ordinances and comprehensive plan.
