Going into this week of play the Forest Lake High School boys soccer team was 1-2-1. At weekís end the team was 2-4-1, but there is plenty of optimism despite the two losses.
The Rangers started the week with a 3-0 loss to Woodbury last Tuesday. Woodbury scored two goals in the first 10 minutes of the game, but had to wait 65 minutes to score their third and final goal.
ìJordan Bengston was out the first half sick and heís kind of been our defensive leader,î Rangers head coach Shaun Conley said. ìIím pretty sure he could have helped on one of the goals. He couldnít stand not playing so he decided to play the second half of the game.î
Saturday afternoon the Rangers lost a heartbreaker on their home field to Park (Cottage Grove) 1-0.
ìWe fully believed we could have won that game and they (Park) were kind of afraid of us because we were playing so well,î Conley said. ìWe just couldnít get a good shot on goal and they had one great shot that beat us. I was disappointed not in the way the boys played, but the way it came out.î
With a three game losing streak on their minds, the Rangers hosted Cretin-Derham Hall in their first ever match up as Suburban East Conference rivals Monday evening.
Sam York gave Jeff Kohler a feed that Kohler took to the net and slipped past the Cretin-Derham Hall goalie early in the game to give the Rangers a 1-0 lead.
ìThat was just a great transition play,î Conley said. ìOur second goal was an absolutely brilliant goal though.î
The Rangers second goal came in the second half when Bryce Bengston played the ball across the field in front of the Cretin-Derham Hall goal. The Cretin-Derham Hall goalie and Efrain Limon were both going for the ball, heading away from the goal. Limon was the first to the ball and chipped the ball over the heads of three Cretin-Derham Hall defenders that crowded the net since their goalie was chasing the ball down.
ìIt was a very stunning goal and that just comes from what weíre doing now in playing with confidence,î Conley said. ìIt was a good feeling to win that game, not because we won the game but because we expected to win.î
The Rangers next game is today, Thursday, at Mounds View at 5 p.m.
ìThe next three games we have are extremely tough in that we play Thursday, Friday and Saturday and thatís hard in soccer and the younger players are going to have to come off the bench,î Conley said. ìI told the guys I expect four wins or at least no losses and they are in form to do it.î
