Prior to last Thursday the Forest Lake High School and the Cretin-Derham Hall Raiders girls tennis teams had never faced each other, but thanks to the Minnesota State High School League placing the Raiders in the Suburban East Conference with the Rangers, the two teams met for the very first time.
The Rangers looked good when the singles scores came in as junior Paige Patchin won her match 6-1, 6-3, and senior Hilary Framke won 6-1, 6-4. Freshman Quinne Patchin took three sets to win her match 6-1, 5-7, 7-6 and freshman Lauren Gravelle completed the Rangers singles sweep with a 6-2, 6-3 win.
The Raiders took two of three doubles matches, but the tandem of juniors Alexa Nelson and Maddy Raasch won 2-6, 6-2, 6-3 as the Rangers won the match 5-2.
ìIt was a good tough match, but they all are in our conference,î Rangers head coach Greg Patchin said. ìItís nice to get a conference win under our belt too.î
Over the weekend the Rangers beat both Champlin Park and Osseo in what ended up being a double dual meet after Irondale dropped out of the tournament. The Rangers defeated Champlin Park 7-0 and Osseo 6-1.
ìAt the midway point we are a solid team in singles and our doubles teams are beginning to jell,î Patchin said. ìWe still have work to do at the third doubles where five girls are vying for two spots.î
The singles players have been solid, going 48-8 so far in the season.
The Rangers play at Stillwater today, Thursday, at 3:30 p.m.
ìOur matches this week against Roseville and Stillwater will determine if we are just another good tennis team or something special,î Patchin said.
