Tacos will still rule the day this Saturday but there will be plenty more to see and do when visitors roll in to Scandia for the annual Taco Daze celebration.
The Scandia Community Center will again serve as celebration headquarters. A parade at 3 p.m. is another big event of the celebration.
For those who plan to arrive early to take out a spot to watch the parade take note, a new parade route will be used this year.
Tacos and taco salads will be served by local Boy Scouts throughout the day at the community center, in keeping with the traditional roots of the local celebration. Other events are sponsored by the Scandia-Marine Lions Club and other area groups.
The one-day celebration includes many other events. They include:
ïA bass fishing tournament on Forest Lake from 7-11 a.m. The contest is a fund-raiser for the Elim Lutheran Church youth program.
Entry fee is $60 per boat. For contest details, including the prize package, call 651-433-4925.
ïThe second annual Scandia Cloverleaf Bike Ride with several options available for various levels of ability. Participants should meet at the Hay Lake School Lions Pavilion from 9-10 a.m.
ïThe first Taco Daze Dodgeball Tournament at the Scandia Community Center from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Team registration deals can be obtained at the Scandia Community Center or Scandia Elementary School. Deadline is today (Thursday).
ïThe third annual Taco Daze Art Fair, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Scandia Community Center featuring jewelry, pottery, painting, custom metal works, watercolor and woodworking.
ïThe Taco Daze Parade, 3 p.m. with float and unit check-in at 2 p.m. A new route starting east of Meisterís on Oakhill Ave. N. will be used this year. The parade ends at Scandia Elementary School.
Cash prizes are being awarded to best of show, best theme float, most creative and best commercial float. For parade information, call Terry Pittman, 651-433-5553.
For area residents who like softball competition, Scandia will also offer some action on Friday night with two games at the Scandia-Marine Lions Club field. The twin bill starts at 7 p.m. under the lights when a team of Scandia old-timers fastpitch players take on a team of Scandia women in a slow-pitch game. In the second game, two fastpitch teams will be in action.
