With only two games on the week one would think the Forest Lake High School boys soccer team could relax, but when those two games are the Rangers first Suburban East Conference games there is no time for relaxing.
The Rangers faced Hastings in their first SEC game of the year last Tuesday. Jordan Bengston sent the ball over the Hastings defense heads to Will Montes who put the ball past the Hastings goalkeeper.
ìThe rule in soccer is that the next five minutes after you score a goal, you have to be careful because youíre on a high and you tend to loosen up on defense,î Rangers head coach Shaun Conley said. ìSure enough about 4:30 after our goal Hastings scored on us.î
Before the first half was over Montes kicked a corner kick into a scrum in front of the Hastings net. After some battling in the scrum Jeff Kohler put the ball in the back of the Hastings net, giving the Rangers a 2-1 lead.
ìIt was an ugly goal, but it ended up being the game winner,î Conley said. ìIt was quite nice.î
Rangers goalie Jake Loeffler recorded the victory, making 16 saves in the game.
ìJake has been a bright spot on our team this year,î Conley said. ìI believe that our goaltenders and defense will have to win games for us this year.î
Last Thursday the Rangers traveled to White Bear Lake where they fell 3-0.
ìI think there were a couple factors that went into that game,î Conley said, ìThe guys came off a big high from winning and came to play one of the better teams in the conference, but theyíre not out of our league. You could tell in warm ups that they just didnít seem like they were ready to play."
The Rangers next game is Saturday when they host Park (Cottage Grove) at 1 p.m.
